Beryl Cook, one of Britain’s most cherished artists, is being honored with a unique open-air installation to mark what would have been her 100th birthday. The celebration, opening on Thursday (10 September), will take place at Bicester Village, a luxury shopping destination in Oxfordshire. The installation features life-sized cutouts of some of Cook’s most recognizable characters, along with large-scale murals inspired by her paintings. These artworks will be scattered throughout the village, with depictions of her beloved rotund pigeons, cats, and dogs hidden among the trees and bushes, blending her whimsical style with the natural surroundings. Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with the art, including a full-scale recreation of Cook’s famous 1996 painting, "Breakfast at Elvira’s," which shows a lively morning at a seaside café. The installation will also guide guests to a pop-up shop by House of Voltaire, where an exclusive capsule collection celebrating Beryl Cook’s legacy will be available. Prices range from £7 for small accessories to £70,000 for a unique, limited-edition piece. The project was developed in close collaboration with Cook’s family, including her granddaughter, Sophie Cook, who shared that her grandmother loved seeing people enjoy themselves and dress up. Sophie said the installation is a “perfect, playful tribute” to her grandmother’s life and work, bringing her vibrant characters to life in the bustling village. James Lambert OBE, deputy chairman of the Bicester Collection, noted that Beryl Cook’s art captured everyday British life with joy and humor, making her work a natural fit for Bicester Village, which focuses on shopping, dining, and socializing. He emphasized that the installation is designed to bring smiles and to be shared, celebrating her colorful style and love for people and daily life. This event also marks the beginning of a three-year partnership between Bicester Village and Studio Voltaire, a not-for-profit art space in London. Under this partnership, Bicester Village will fund Studio Voltaire’s Learning Programme, which offers free, artist-led workshops and creative activities to local schools, colleges, and community groups. The initiative aims to provide accessible creative opportunities to those who might otherwise not have them.
