Microsoft is broadening the use of ChatGPT within its office tools, making the AI assistant available directly inside Microsoft Word. Previously, the integration was limited to Excel and PowerPoint, and now it's accessible to all users, including those with free accounts. To use the feature, users must download the add-on from the Microsoft Marketplace through the Home > Add-ins section in Word. After installation, they need to connect it to an OpenAI account, which then allows ChatGPT to appear in a sidebar next to the document. Once set up, the assistant can perform several helpful tasks, such as summarizing text, correcting or rephrasing selected sections, converting instructions into a draft, and adjusting titles, structure, or formatting. However, not all features are available yet. For example, conversations started in Word do not appear in ChatGPT's overall history, and any information stored in memory or skills saved on the user’s account are not accessible through the add-on. Additionally, using the ChatGPT module in Word counts against the user’s ChatGPT subscription quota. This usage might come from a shared pool that also includes other premium functions like Codex. While plugins are not currently usable from Word, services connected to the ChatGPT account—such as Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, or Dropbox—can provide the add-on with the information it needs. This expansion highlights Microsoft's effort to integrate advanced AI tools into everyday productivity tasks, though some limitations remain in terms of functionality and data accessibility.
