France has seen a notable rise in the number of gyms over the past four years. The total number of gyms has grown from 3,924 in 2020 to 5,910 today, marking a 50% increase. This expansion aligns with typical subscription peaks in September and January, often driven by New Year's resolutions. Gym memberships in France start at around 25 euros per month, with prices varying based on the gym's services, location, and additional features. Basic-Fit, a Dutch gym chain established in 1984, has expanded across Europe with 2,150 clubs. It offers 24-hour access and has a 4.2/5 rating on Trustpilot. The most affordable membership is 24.99 euros (19.99 euros for the membership itself), but extra services raise the cost. However, the basic package doesn’t include access to gyms outside France, and all subscriptions require a one-year commitment. Group classes are limited to six categories, and gyms are often crowded. Fitness Park, a French chain founded in 2009, operates nearly 380 gyms with extended hours from 6 to 11 pm, seven days a week. Its Classic subscription starts at 30 euros (19 euros for the first four weeks) and includes video classes and progress tracking. However, the network has a 2/5 rating on Trustpilot, due to complaints about unauthorized charges and difficulty in canceling subscriptions. Additional options like group classes and access to water fountains are available for higher fees. Other notable chains include L'Orange bleue, Keepcool, Gigafit, On Air, Neoness, and Magic Form, each offering unique features, subscription models, and pricing structures. These vary from no-commitment options to long-term contracts, and from affordable basic memberships to premium services with additional fees. Independent gyms like Les Cercles de la forme and Planet Fitness also provide diverse options for potential members. Some gyms offer mixed subscriptions that combine fitness with other activities like swimming or climbing, giving members more flexibility in their workout routines.
