Atari VCS discontinuation details

The Atari VCS, a modern console inspired by the classic Atari 2600 from the late 1970s, will no longer be sold by the manufacturer after its online store closes in February 2027. However, the console itself will not be discontinued, and users will still be able to use it.

Atari VCS features and history

The VCS allows users to run classic Atari games, modern games, and even Linux applications. It also supports streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW through the Chrome browser, and it is possible to install Windows on the device. The console was first announced in 2017 and launched in 2021 after delays and a Kickstarter campaign.

Atari CEO reflects on VCS project

Wade Rosen, CEO of Atari since 2021, mentioned in a 2023 interview that the company would approach the VCS project differently if it were to be undertaken again. He acknowledged that the console does not align with the company’s current direction but emphasized that Atari remains committed to supporting its users.

Atari’s plan after store closure

Following the closure of the online store, Atari will release an operating system update to disconnect the console from the company’s servers, allowing users to operate the device independently. A homebrew app will also be introduced to let users add new games without an official store, with instructions provided in early 2027.

Atari’s commitment to users

Atari acknowledges that the changes will be unwelcome for some users but is focused on ensuring a smooth transition. The company has stated that it will continue to support those who have invested in the VCS throughout the process.
