Atari has announced the release of the 800XL, a new computer that closely replicates the design and features of the original 1983 model. The device includes a mechanical keyboard and a port compatible with original cartridges for the Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE systems. It comes with 25 pre-installed games, including classics such as Centipede, Missile Command, and Asteroids. Users can also develop their own games using Basic programming by typing code directly on the keyboard. The 800XL is being produced by Plaion, Atari’s partner manufacturer in this project. The company has incorporated modern features, such as four USB-A ports, which allow users to connect external drives and other peripherals. This makes it possible to run games and software originally designed for 8-bit computers and the Atari 5200. The device also includes an HDMI port that displays images in a 4:3 format with pixel-perfect rendering and CRT filters, as well as frame borders to hide black bars on the television screen. The included joystick is inspired by the classic Atari controller but features eight buttons instead of the original four. The 800XL is now available for preorder at a price of 219.99 euros, with the first deliveries expected in April 2027. Plaion, which is also responsible for producing the Neo-Geo AES+, has faced delays with that product as well. The Neo-Geo AES+ was originally scheduled for release but has been postponed for nearly a year due to various challenges in production and development.
