Huawei has introduced the MatePad Air, a new tablet that has sparked comparisons with Apple’s upcoming iPad Air. The MatePad Air boasts a 12-inch OLED display capable of a 144Hz refresh rate and up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness. A higher-end variant, called the PaperMatte, can achieve up to 2,000 nits. This special display uses a unique anti-glare treatment that reduces reflections by up to 99%, giving the screen a paper-like texture. This feature is particularly useful for users who write with a stylus and helps reduce eye strain and smudges. In the UK, the MatePad Air comes with the PaperMatte display on all models, starting at £699.99. This is significantly cheaper than Apple’s nano-texture display, which is only available on the most expensive iPad Pro models and starts at $1,899. Additionally, the MatePad Air’s base model includes 256GB of storage, compared to the iPad Air’s 128GB starting storage. The MatePad Air is also lighter and thinner than the 13-inch iPad Air, weighing 509g and measuring 5.3mm in thickness. Despite its slim design, it includes a larger battery of 10,100mAh, compared to Apple’s 9,705mAh battery. These design choices make the MatePad Air more portable and efficient for daily use. While the MatePad Air excels in display quality and portability, Apple’s M-series chips still offer a performance edge, especially for demanding tasks like video editing. However, for everyday activities such as watching videos and browsing the web, the MatePad Air's OLED display is often preferred over the iPad Air's LCD screen. The iPad Air's display is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate and features thicker bezels around the screen, which are less modern by current standards.
