Huawei has introduced the MateBook Pro S, a sleek 14.2-inch laptop that weighs just 798 grams and is 11.9mm thick at its thickest point. It runs on HarmonyOS 6.1, Huawei’s own operating system, and is powered by the company’s custom Kirin XE90 processor. The laptop went on sale in China on 14 August, starting at 7,999 yuan (approximately $1,200). While there are no official plans to release it in Western markets, third-party sellers are already offering the device to global customers, though at a much higher price. The MateBook Pro S features a 3.1K resolution, 120Hz flexible OLED touchscreen with a bright display that reaches up to 1000 nits of full-screen brightness and 1600 nits at the peak. It also includes a 54Wh battery and is currently only available in China. Though it is lighter than many competing laptops, it is not the lightest on the market, with some Japanese models weighing up to 164 grams less. Huawei has achieved a slim design through the use of lightweight materials like magnesium-lithium alloy and magnesium-aluminum covers, as well as a compact cooling system featuring what the company calls "Shark Fin" blades. One of the standout features of the MateBook Pro S is its Kirin XE90 processor, which Huawei claims offers improved performance and energy efficiency compared to the standard Kirin X90. However, these claims are based on Huawei's own data, and independent verification is limited. Some reports suggest the XE90 may be built using the same SMIC 7nm N+2 node process as the Kirin X90, rather than the more advanced 5nm process that some Chinese media had previously claimed. This could affect the laptop’s performance and power efficiency, which are critical factors in the ultraportable laptop segment. Huawei offers several versions of the MateBook Pro S, including Standard, Soft Light, Privacy, and Collector’s Edition models, each with slightly different weights and thicknesses. The standard and Privacy models remain the lightest at 798 grams, while the Collector’s Edition is slightly heavier. The laptop also boasts features like 18 hours of video playback, a WiFi 7+ connection with a range of up to 1000 meters in open areas, and a six-microphone array capable of capturing clear audio from up to 10 meters away. Despite these features, the device's performance and technology details remain largely based on Huawei's own claims, with limited independent testing available.
