OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has filed legal documents against Elon Musk’s xAI, claiming that the integration of ChatGPT with Apple’s AI features, known as Apple Intelligence, was not performing well and had been consistently underperforming. According to the documents, very few users were actually using Apple Intelligence, and the impact of the ChatGPT integration on competitors like xAI was negligible. OpenAI’s expert, Dr. Catherine Tucker, estimated that the number of users accessing ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence was in line with OpenAI’s own belief that Apple Intelligence had minimal real-world usage. Apple introduced the ability to use ChatGPT within its Siri assistant in December 2024. However, the integration required users to go through a multi-step opt-in process, which may have limited its adoption. The legal documents are partially redacted, making it difficult to fully understand the nature of Apple and OpenAI’s partnership. OpenAI claims that the integration did not meet expectations and that Apple Intelligence, as a product, was underdeveloped at launch, falling behind its competitors in functionality and performance. Apple allowed users to access ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence in features like Visual Intelligence, but OpenAI’s legal filing suggests that this feature was not widely used by consumers. It is unclear whether the low usage was due to the opt-in process, limitations within Siri, or a preference for the standalone ChatGPT app. With recent improvements to Siri under the new Siri AI brand, Apple appears to be starting over with its AI strategy. This shift may leave OpenAI reflecting on what could have been if the integration had been with the more advanced version of Siri AI instead.
