Police are continuing their search for a man seen walking through a Jewish area in north London with what appeared to be an assault rifle, causing panic among shoppers. The incident occurred on Edgwarebury Lane, near Edgware Underground station, on Wednesday at 3:50 pm. The street is home to numerous Jewish-owned businesses, including a kosher supermarket and the popular Grodz bakery. CCTV footage captured the man walking confidently with the weapon, which is now believed to be a fake. However, witnesses said it was difficult to tell if the rifle was real, prompting people to seek cover in the middle of the day. A shop worker, identified only as Lucasz, described the scene to Metro: "He was walking down the street with the gun in his hand, and he also had something that looked like a bullet magazine. He didn’t say anything and was just walking confidently. The gun looked like it might have been plastic, but you can’t tell from a distance. People were looking for cover—it was the middle of the day." Lucasz added that police arrived about 15 minutes later, and the situation was very scary, especially given the high concentration of Jewish businesses in the area. Another witness expressed concern over the normality of the situation, saying, "The guy was just walking along as if it was normal to carry a Kalashnikov or assault rifle along a busy shopping street in the middle of the day. People ran for cover; you can never be sure if the gun is real. There is a synagogue near here and lots of Jewish businesses. We are on high alert. The guy didn't interact with anyone, but it was so intimidating." The Metropolitan Police confirmed that no arrests have been made and the search for the suspect is ongoing. In a statement, they said the man was seen with a firearm, which they believe to be a toy based on eyewitness accounts. The police were called to the area after reports of a man with an item that had a broken handle and made toy noises. A significant number of officers, including armed units and a drone, were deployed to handle the situation and search the area. Nearby venues, including schools and synagogues, were temporarily locked down as a precaution. No injuries have been reported, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
