A warning message circulating on WhatsApp claims that users must activate the "Advanced Privacy" setting to prevent Meta AI from reading all their conversations "starting Saturday." This message has been spreading since 2025 in different forms and is based on a real WhatsApp feature, making it more believable. The message warns that "starting Saturday, the AI will be available on WhatsApp and will have access to all conversations." It suggests that without action from administrators, Meta AI could read group messages, access phone numbers, and even read private discussions stored on smartphones. However, none of this is planned or accurate. The "Saturday" mentioned in the message is never specified and changes with each version of the message. The same warning has resurfaced multiple times since 2025. Meta AI has been available on WhatsApp in France since March 2025. This means the message about a general AI activation on Saturday is incorrect. Meta AI cannot freely access user conversations. According to WhatsApp's documentation, Meta AI only has access to messages that users explicitly choose to share with it. These include messages mentioning @Meta AI or those users manually send to the assistant. Other personal messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption. However, when users interact with Meta AI directly, Meta does receive the prompts, the messages shared, and the feedback provided on the AI's responses. WhatsApp is also working on features that allow the AI to process messages at the user's request, such as summarizing a conversation or helping draft a response. These features may rely on a system called Private Processing, which Meta claims allows the AI to process information without WhatsApp or Meta being able to access the messages, the queries, or the responses. The viral message is not entirely baseless. The "Advanced Privacy" feature of a conversation does exist. WhatsApp introduced it in April 2025 to add extra protections for sensitive discussions. When activated, participants cannot export the conversation or automatically save its media in their gallery. Meta AI functions like answering questions, creating images, or generating summaries in that conversation are also blocked. However, this feature does not prevent Meta AI from accessing user conversations, as such access does not exist. WhatsApp clearly states that Meta AI can only read messages that users choose to share with it, regardless of whether the Advanced Privacy setting is enabled. The viral message also contains an inaccuracy, claiming that only the group creator can activate this protection. In reality, administrators can activate or deactivate the Advanced Privacy feature. This makes the option useful for groups where sensitive information is shared. There is no urgency before "Saturday," and Meta AI will not suddenly access user conversations if this setting is not activated. To activate Advanced Privacy, users can go to the conversation information, select "Advanced Privacy of the Conversation," and enable it. This action blocks the export of the chat, the automatic download of media, and certain AI functions within that conversation.
