This feature is meant to protect users by preventing others in a group or private conversation from exporting message history, automatically saving received media to their gallery, or using Meta AI to summarize or analyze messages. However, a screenshot shared by the reader showed that in the French version of the app, the message indicated that activating the setting would allow other members to save media, use Meta AI, and export the conversation — the opposite of what the feature is supposed to do. Numerama checked the official documentation to verify the intended functionality of the feature. Introduced in April 2025, the "Advanced Conversation Privacy" setting is designed to block conversation exports, disable automatic media downloads to the gallery, and prevent access to Meta AI functions within the chat. According to the documentation, the feature should stop these actions, not allow them. The issue appears to be a translation error in the French version of the app, where a critical negation — such as "will no longer be able to" — is missing from the text. This translation error seems to affect only the French version of WhatsApp. When Numerama tested the English and German versions, the correct negation was present in both, confirming that the error is specific to the French language. It is unclear when this mistake was introduced into the app. Numerama has informed Meta about the issue and will update the article once a response is received. The incident highlights the importance of accurate translations in software, especially for features that directly impact user privacy and security. While the error does not affect users of other language versions, it raises questions about how such issues are identified and resolved in multilingual applications. Until Meta provides further clarification, users of the French version of WhatsApp may be at risk of misunderstanding the actual protections offered by the "Advanced Conversation Privacy" feature.
