Rebellion, a well-known video game developer, has confirmed that their upcoming game Alien Deathstorm was built using a new version of their Atomfall engine. This engine is the same one used for previous games like Alien Isolation, but with significant upgrades. The new version allows the team to create a more immersive horror experience, combining first-person gameplay with sandbox elements—meaning players can influence the environment and how enemies react in unpredictable ways. According to producer Martin Willingham and head of design Ben Fisher, Alien Deathstorm is not a traditional survival shooter, which typically focuses on managing resources and avoiding enemies at all costs. Instead, the game aims to offer a more dynamic experience where player choices can lead to varied encounters and outcomes. The developers emphasized that the game’s design encourages exploration and interaction with the environment, creating a more flexible and engaging gameplay loop. The upgraded Atomfall engine includes improvements in lighting, visual effects, and a more realistic atmosphere. Willingham noted that these enhancements were crucial for delivering the intended horror experience. The development team worked extensively on features like GPU particles, which improve the visual quality of effects such as smoke and fire, and a refined fog system that contributes to the game’s eerie, immersive setting. As of now, Alien Deathstorm does not have an official release date, but it is expected to launch in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, as well as PC. Fans of the horror genre and those who enjoy open-ended gameplay are likely to be excited about the project, especially given the upgrades to the engine and the promise of a more interactive experience.
