Rebellion Developments, the studio behind the Sniper Elite series and the game Atomfall, is working on a new first-person survival horror title called Alien Deathstorm. The game is being described as a "rare beast" in the genre, meaning it's different from the usual linear corridor shooters that many horror games rely on. Set on a storm-battered off-world colony, Alien Deathstorm promises a "visceral first-person action horror experience" where players must survive by adapting to a constantly changing monstrous threat. TechRadar Gaming recently got hands-on with Alien Deathstorm at Gamescom, an annual gaming convention in Germany, and later interviewed the developers about the game’s design. The developers explained that while the game may seem like a typical survival shooter with standard horror elements, it includes sandbox features that allow players to influence how enemies behave and interact. This means that encounters are not entirely scripted, giving the game a more dynamic and unpredictable feel. Producer Martin Willingham highlighted the game’s dynamic nature, explaining that it allows for different horror experiences in each playthrough and across various difficulty levels. He noted that many traditional horror games are designed with set sequences to build tension and deliver jump scares, which can reduce replayability. To combat this, the team created a system where enemy encounters are generated based on the player's actions, leading to unique experiences each time. Ben Fisher, the head of design, called Alien Deathstorm "dynamically generated," with levels played in sequence, each offering its own sandbox environment. He emphasized that the game avoids the typical corridor-based gameplay, where action only happens at the end of a hallway. Instead, enemies can appear from any direction, making the player more alert and responsive to their surroundings. An official release date for Alien Deathstorm has not been announced yet, but it is expected to launch in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Series S, and PC.
