Victor Wembanyama, the 22-year-old French basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs, has confirmed that he will not participate in the growing trend of NBA players endorsing sports betting websites. During a preseason training session, he told reporters that he finds it "very sad" to see some athletes promote gambling. "Absolutely not," Wembanyama said when asked if he would accept a share of the sports betting industry's profits. "I will never do that," he added. He emphasized that while others may choose to engage with betting sites, he will not be one of them. Wembanyama's comments came just a week after LeBron James, a four-time NBA champion and former ambassador for the betting company DraftKings, signed a deal with Polymarket, a prediction site. Other NBA stars, such as Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, are also involved with betting companies, either as ambassadors or shareholders. While the NBA allows teams and organizations to partner with betting firms, it explicitly prohibits players from promoting gambling to the league's audience. Wembanyama, who led the Spurs to the NBA Finals in his third season, recently signed a five-year contract worth $252 million. He has also reportedly signed a deal with Nike to create his own signature shoe and is an ambassador for the luxury brand Louis Vuitton. According to American media, Wembanyama is choosing his brand partnerships based on the positive influence they can have, rather than financial gain. "In the past, financial considerations were taken into account," he said. "That is no longer the case. Today, I want to promote things that have a positive impact, a good influence, and with which I can share messages and values." Wembanyama believes that the greatest strength of athletes is not their wealth, but their ability to inspire. "Obviously, we make millions and millions. That is not our greatest strength. Our greatest strength is to inspire. I want to inspire in a positive way," he said. While many of his peers are involved with sports betting sites, Wembanyama has made it clear that he will not be one of them. Instead, he prefers to use his platform through partnerships with Nike and Louis Vuitton to spread messages of positivity and influence.
