Maxime Aubin, a sports journalist who has lived in the United States for the past seven years and in San Antonio for the last three, has written a book titled Wembanyama, three years at the top of the NBA. Aubin is primarily a correspondent for the French daily newspaper L’Équipe, and he closely followed the career of Victor Wembanyama, a towering French basketball player, during his first three seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The book traces Wembanyama's journey from his arrival with the San Antonio Spurs in 2023 up to the tense final of the NBA in 2026. The book highlights Wembanyama's remarkable rise, including a serious injury he suffered in February 2025—a shoulder thrombosis—that could have ended his career. Aubin notes that Wembanyama, known affectionately as "Wemby," gradually opened up to him as a trusting relationship developed. The book includes personal stories from Wembanyama's life, such as his love for reading, drawing, and playing chess. During a trip to New York in December 2024, Wembanyama surprised fans and locals by appearing in a city park to play chess against strangers. He live-tweeted the event on his X account, drawing a crowd. The 2.21-meter-tall player stayed for about an hour in the rain, winning two games and losing two before heading to the airport for a flight back to San Antonio. Later, Wembanyama proposed the idea of a chess tournament for NBA players, with the proceeds donated to a charity chosen by the winner. The Spurs' regular season in 2025–2026 ended with a strong record of 62 wins and 20 losses, during which Wembanyama was unanimously named the best defender in the league. In July 2026, he signed a five-year contract with San Antonio worth $252 million. In August 2026, coach Frédéric Fauthoux named him captain of the French national team. The Spurs are expected to play two regular-season games in Paris in January 2027. The book Wembanyama, three years at the top of the NBA by Maxime Aubin is set to be released on October 1st. It includes a preface by former NBA player Rudy Gobert and is available for purchase.
