The Ballet of the Grand Theatre of Geneva has launched its new season with a program titled Oceans, which includes two distinct performances: Brise-lames by Damien Jalet and River Without Banks by Kyle Abraham. Brise-lames, originally created in 2020 at the Paris Opera, is now being added to the Ballet of the Grand Theatre’s repertoire. The piece features set and costume designs by visual artist JR, with lighting by Fabiana Piccioli. The music includes compositions by Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm, along with work by Koki Nakano. This performance blends contemporary dance with visual art and ambient sound, creating a unique sensory experience for the audience. River Without Banks marks a world premiere by Kyle Abraham, a significant figure in contemporary African-American dance. The piece features eight dancers from the Ballet of the Grand Theatre, who perform solos, duets, and group numbers in a dynamic setting designed by set and lighting artist Dan Scully. The costumes are by Reid & Harriet Design, and the music is composed by Leo Svirsky. Pianists accompanying the performance include Svirsky, Reinier van Houdt, and Réginald Le Reun. Stephanie Terasaki and Donovan Reed serve as choreographic assistants, helping to shape the performance’s artistic vision. Kyle Abraham is the founder of A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, a dance company he established in 2006.
