Growing interest in off-season travel

Interest in off-season and winter departures is increasing, with travelers attracted to quieter destinations, less crowds, and the opportunity to explore European waterways at different times of the year.

New cruise additions planned for 2027

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) noted in a recent communication that additions planned for 2027 include three ships from AmaWaterways and new ships from American Cruise Lines. Emerald Cruises will also add the D ship.

CLIA emphasizes sector diversity

According to Andy Harmer, general manager of CLIA for the United Kingdom and Ireland, river cruises continue to offer a wide range of choices, and the investments being made for 2027 testify to the incredible diversity of the sector. He stated that for travel agents, this means more opportunities to offer their clients the river cruise that perfectly suits them.

CLIA supports industry growth

To support this phenomenon, CLIA is multiplying training sessions and exchange opportunities dedicated to river cruises. In October, CLIA organized the "River Cruise Forum" in Manchester, bringing together travel agents, river cruise operators, and industry partners for an entire day dedicated to work sessions, networking, and training on products.

Upcoming RiverView conference

From 5 to 8 March 2027, the association will also hold a conference called RiverView, whose seats were fully booked shortly after registration opened in September. Participants will take part in a two-night cruise connecting Budapest to Vienna, with a stop in Bratislava. The stay will continue with an additional night in Vienna, where work sessions and guided tours of the ships will take place.

Trends in river cruising

CLIA highlights several emerging and established trends for river cruises, including an increasing demand for distant destinations, such as Asia and South America, as travelers seek immersive cultural experiences and the serenity offered by travel with a recognized operator. There is also a demand for shorter cruises, with itineraries of three, four, or five nights constituting an alternative to traditional urban stays.

Shift toward cultural and immersive experiences

Passengers are seeking experiences that go beyond traditional tourism, favoring local culture, gastronomy, traditions, and opportunities to exchange with local communities. More off-season travel is also on the rise, with interest in departures during off-season or winter increasing.

Rise in solo river cruises

Additionally, there is a rise in solo river cruises, with demand from solo travelers increasing, supported by the sociability inherent to river cruises, the smaller size of ships, included excursions, as well as a wider range of departures and accommodations specifically designed for people traveling alone.
