Classical ballet returns to Bordeaux
The Grand Theatre of Bordeaux is set to host a major classical ballet production for the end-of-year celebrations, marking the return of the centerpiece of classical ballet to the stage after more than ten years. The production is a new creation by Dutch choreographer Rachel Beaujean, co-produced with the Northern Ballet.A reimagined Swan Lake
This new production reinterprets the classic Swan Lake ballet, originally created in 1877 to the music of Piotr Illitch Tchaikovsky. The National Opera of Bordeaux presents a version that challenges traditional gender roles, offering a heroine who takes control of her own destiny rather than being a passive figure.A new narrative for Odette
The libretto, developed in collaboration with dramaturge Uzma Hameed, redefines the character of Odette. Rather than being a victim of fate, she is portrayed as a figure of freedom and agency. Her final flight symbolizes emancipation rather than death, reflecting a broader commentary on 19th-century romantic conventions.Scenography and artistic vision
The production features a scenography by Colin Richmond, inspired by the 18th century, which integrates seamlessly with the Grand Theatre's setting. Lighting by Alastair West enhances the poetic atmosphere, while the ballet's sixty dancers will perform alongside the National Bordeaux Aquitaine Orchestra.Cast and production details
The ballet will be performed by the Ballet of the National Opera of Bordeaux, under the direction of Éric Quilleré. The orchestra will be conducted by Maria Seletskaja from 9 to 23 December and Judith Yan from 26 December to 3 January. The production is a co-production between the Northern Ballet and the National Opera of Bordeaux, supported by the Philippine Rothschild Enterprise Foundation.Performance schedule and details
