New Carmen production premieres in Bordeaux

A new production of Carmen by Georges Bizet premiered at the National Opera of Bordeaux from 9 to 17 November 2026. The production was created in 2024 through a collaboration between the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the National Opera of Bordeaux, and the Shangyin Opera House.

Staging focuses on universal themes

The staging by Emmanuelle Bastet emphasizes the universal dimension of the narrative, focusing on the mechanics of violence and obsession that lead to femicide, without offering a moral judgment. It highlights the structural reality of a woman murdered by her jealous lover and underscores the contemporary resonances of the tragedy.

Visual design creates cinematic atmosphere

The production's scenography by Tim Northam creates a cinematic visual atmosphere, evolving from a realistic setting to an abstract space. This transition symbolizes the tightening noose around Carmen, reflecting the psychological and emotional tension in the story.

Cast includes notable performers

The production features Elmina Hasan as Carmen and Julien Henric as Don José. Other notable cast members include Natalia Tanasii as Micaëla, Jérôme Boutillier and John Chest as Escamillo, and Li Ziqi as Frasquita. The full cast includes a range of international and local performers.

Production includes major musical and vocal ensembles

The production includes the National Bordeaux Aquitaine Orchestra, the chorus of the National Opera of Bordeaux, and the Young Vocal Academy of Aquitaine (JAVA). Salvatore Caputo serves as chorus master, and Marie Chavanel is the chorus mistress. The workshops were conducted by the ONB and the Shangyin Opera House.
