Game release details announced

Natsume will publish AYAKASHI Fishing Folktails on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch in the West during the middle of 2027, with a new English version. The game was originally released in Japan under the title Boku to Tsuri Nikki (ぼくと釣り日記) on October 8.

Collaboration between companies

Natsume, which develops and publishes family-oriented games worldwide, has partnered with Imagineer and TOYBOX to release the game in America and Europe. The game was developed by TOYBOX Inc. under the direction of Yasuhiro Wada, the creator of Harvest Moon, and is published by Imagineer in Japan.

Company's statement on the game

Hiro Maekawa, president and chief executive officer of Natsume, explained in a statement that the company was enthusiastic about bringing the game to the West. He highlighted immersive fishing mechanics, beautiful Japanese scenery, and a story rooted in the country's folklore, for a relaxing and engaging experience.

Game's narrative and setting

The player takes on the role of a young man who goes fishing in freshwater after a mysterious dream, accompanied by a diverse group of supernatural companions, the Ayakashi. His objective is to lift a curse that drains the colors of the world by capturing cursed lords of several rivers and lakes and helping the Ayakashi spirits resolve their problems.

Gameplay and mechanics

Natsume describes a realistic fishing game that is both calming and demanding, blending the supernatural with Japanese landscapes. The game is played in two parts: first, the player explores to locate where the fish are hiding, and then manipulates the rod in rhythm with the energy of the fish once it is hooked.

Fishing elements and variety

The game features more than 100 species, which combine real and familiar fish with original and quirky monster fish. Some are inspired by Japanese folklore, while others are clearly bizarre, such as the Half-Tigerfish, literally half a tigerfish. Capturing the largest specimens allows the player to obtain gold medals. Eight rivers, lakes, and ponds are available to explore.

Equipment and tools

In terms of equipment, the game offers floats and lures, as well as a special torrent fishing rod that does not require a reel. Each rod and bait has unique properties, adding depth to the gameplay experience.
