Animated film explores friendship and adulthood

Four years after the success of The Amazing World of Gumball: The Last Quest, creators Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado reunite for Island of Memories, an animated film centered on friendship and the challenges of growing up. The story follows Jo and Raissa, two childhood friends who have just graduated and are about to take different paths in life.

Mysterious journey to a mythical island

After celebrating their final evening together, Jo and Raissa discover a mysterious portal that transports them to the island of Nakali. This fantastical place is home to fairy-like and mythological creatures inspired by Philippine folktales from their childhood. Some of these creatures are friendly, while others pose serious threats.

Heroic adventure with unique allies

With the help of Raww, a kind but clumsy werewolf dog, and a group of small companions with special powers, Jo and Raissa must confront the Manananggal, the island’s most fearsome creature. The film features vibrant animation, manga-style influences, and an imaginative collection of creatures that may appeal to both pre-teens and their parents.

French voice cast highlights cultural connections

Universal chose French voice actors for the film with parents in mind. Actress Manon Bresch, known for Thieves and Kraken, voices Jo in the French version, while Anaïde Rozam, from Culte: Loft Story, lends her voice to Raissa. Bresch described the dubbing experience as challenging but unique, emphasizing the need to convey emotion solely through voice.

Diverse cast brings characters to life

Actor Xavier Lacaille, known as The Giaccomo, voices Raww, while American singer Billy Crawford, of Philippine descent, voices the baby demon Bungi in the French version. Crawford noted the challenge of dubbing in French, especially for specific words, but praised the studio’s support. The film also highlights Philippine culture, including folklore, traditions, and cuisine.

Celebrating Philippine culture on the global stage

Island of Memories showcases the beauty of the Philippines, from its landscapes to its family traditions. Billy Crawford expressed pride in being part of a film that highlights his country’s positive aspects, such as its paradise-like islands and rich family stories. The film is now available in theaters for audiences aged 8 and up.
