New gaming fee amendment sparks concern

A new amendment has raised concerns among gamers, especially with less than a month until the release of GTA VI. The amendment proposes a fee of 5.5 cents per gigabyte of downloaded game content.

Fee aims to reduce energy use

The measure is intended to encourage major technology companies to optimize and compress their data streams, thereby reducing the energy consumption of servers and networks.

Costs may be passed to gamers

The new fees would be paid by major game producers and data distributors, but this could lead to increased prices for gamers. The amendment was narrowly adopted by 11 votes against 10 in the National Assembly.

Cloud services and subscriptions affected

The amendment would also affect cloud storage and subscriptions such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass. These services rely heavily on data transmission and could face increased costs.

Combined with end of physical games

Although the measure is still at the stage of a budget proposal, if combined with Sony PlayStation's decision to end the production of physical games starting in January 2028, it begins to add up for gamers. It is even worth wondering if GTA VI, scheduled for November 19, will be the last major game launch.
