Zverev aims to top the ATP rankings

Alexander Zverev, a 29-year-old German tennis player, is on track to end the 2026 season as the world's top-ranked professional player. This would be a major milestone, as he previously held the number one spot in junior tennis rankings in 2013.

Elite group of tennis players

Zverev would join a rare group of five male players who have reached the top of the ATP rankings in both junior and professional tennis. Notable members include Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Roger Federer, and Andy Roddick, each of whom achieved this dual distinction in their careers.

Zverev's path to the top

Currently, Zverev is ranked second in the ATP rankings, just behind Jannik Sinner. To officially become number one, he needs to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna. If he achieves this, he will surpass Sinner in the next rankings update.

Zverev's historical significance

Even if he does not reach the quarterfinals in Vienna, Zverev is already guaranteed to finish the 2026 season as the top-ranked player. This would make him the second German in history to hold the ATP number one spot, following Boris Becker.
