Waheed Abu Naim is an English teacher at Al Mughayyir boys’ school, located in a small village in the West Bank. He finds his work rewarding, often greeted by students with handshakes and smiles as he arrives at school. However, the past year has been especially challenging for him. His village is now encircled by Israeli settlers, and the military has restricted access to the area, leaving only one road open with a checkpoint. This has made it difficult for teachers from nearby villages to reach their schools. In April, a tragic incident occurred near the school playground when a gunman opened fire, killing a 14-year-old student. Waheed rushed the injured teenager to the hospital, only to learn that his own brother had also been killed in the attack. The event highlighted the increasing dangers faced by civilians in the region. Senior Middle East correspondent Emma Graham-Harrison spoke with Annie Kelly about the ongoing violence, noting that hundreds of children have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers over the past three years. The attack on the school, which left four students dead, was described as particularly horrifying. Graham-Harrison expressed concern that the level of violence may not decrease and could even escalate in the coming months, raising further alarm about the safety of children in the region.
