2026 property tax deadline

The property tax for 2026, known as the taxe foncière, is set to close for payment this Tuesday, October 20, after midnight, with late payers facing penalties.

Tax affects millions in France

The tax, which funds local authorities, affects nearly 32 million property owners in France. Since August 27, property owners not on a monthly billing schedule can check their tax notices in their personal space on the tax website.

Tax amount increased slightly

Those on a monthly schedule could access their notices since September 19. The average tax this year is 1,126 euros per taxpayer, up from 1,117 euros last year, due to a 0.8% increase in the national calculation base.

Different payment deadlines apply

For those paying by check, transfer, or cash with an amount less than or equal to 300 euros, the payment deadline was October 15. However, for online payments made via smartphone or tablet, the deadline is set for this Tuesday evening.

Deduction dates and options

The deduction from bank accounts will begin on Monday, October 26, as October 25 is a Sunday this year. Taxpayers can also choose an immediate deduction, which will occur three days after payment registration.

Extended deadlines for some

Farmers in departments affected by climatic hazards have an extended deadline until November 15. Exemptions or reductions in the tax can be granted by the tax authorities.

Late payment penalties

Those who pay on time will see the deduction made from their accounts starting October 26. However, those who delay payment beyond the deadline risk a 10% penalty on the tax due, with additional late interest of 0.2% per month, or 2.4% per year.

Example of potential penalties

For example, a 1,000 euro tax with a partial or missed payment could result in up to 124 euros in penalties, according to an example cited.
