New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific, has been named one of the top destinations in the Best in Travel 2027 list by the travel guide Lonely Planet. The inclusion marks a significant boost for the region, which is working to revive its international tourism sector after years of decline. Jessica Lockhart, Lonely Planet's editorial director for Oceania, was invited by New Caledonia Tourism to explore the archipelago in December 2025. Supported by local experts, she spent time discovering the region’s unique attractions, from its stunning lagoons and mountainous landscapes to its rich Kanak culture and expansive natural bushlands. Her experiences led her to return multiple times and create several pieces of content highlighting the destination. Lockhart described her time in New Caledonia as a revelation, saying it "quickly challenged everything I thought I knew about the region, in the best way possible." Her positive impressions are expected to help attract more international visitors, particularly as the territory aims to reestablish itself as a premier travel destination. In related news, Aircalin, the national airline of New Caledonia, is preparing for the arrival of its first A350-900 aircraft. The plane is being assembled in Toulouse, France, and is set to be delivered by the end of 2026. This development is part of the airline’s efforts to modernize its fleet and support increased air travel to and from the region.
