NVIDIA may release a 24 GB RTX 5080

Reports suggest that NVIDIA is preparing to release a 24 GB version of the GeForce RTX 5080. This decision is reportedly driven by the limited availability of the RTX 5090, which is increasingly being reserved for artificial intelligence applications, and the recent availability of 3 GB GDDR7 memory chips.

Shift in NVIDIA's product strategy

The potential upgrade of the RTX 5080 involves replacing its current 2 GB memory chips with 3 GB versions, increasing the total VRAM from 16 GB to 24 GB. This change is part of a broader shift in NVIDIA's strategy, which includes redirecting production of its high-end GB202 GPUs toward AI accelerators.

Rumors and delays in product line updates

The possibility of a new RTX 5080 version was first mentioned in April 2025, linked to a planned overhaul of the product line, including "SUPER" models. However, the RTX 50 SUPER series did not materialize. Recent developments indicate that NVIDIA may be reviving this idea, with some production being redirected from gaming GPUs to AI-focused hardware.

Preparation for a limited 24 GB RTX 5080 launch

According to BenchLife, a Taiwanese hardware site, NVIDIA is nearly ready to launch the 24 GB RTX 5080, and its partners are already preparing to release new models. However, the availability of this new card is expected to be limited, and it is unlikely that it will be sold in large quantities.

RTX 5080 24 GB may replace two existing models

Board Channels, cited by Haruzake on X, confirmed that the new RTX 5080 24 GB would replace both the high-end RTX 5090 (32 GB) and the less powerful RTX 5080 16 GB. It also stated that NVIDIA has already sold out of its stock of the 16 GB version and that the new card is expected to launch within weeks, possibly as early as December 2025.

Uncertainty around the launch timeline

Despite these reports, the exact timing of the launch remains unclear. Some analysts suggest that the January 2026 CES event would be a more suitable time for such a major product launch. Meanwhile, the RTX 5090 is nearly impossible to find, and the RTX 5080 has already been removed from NVIDIA's official US store.
