Cornwall has been named the top destination in the UK in a recent survey conducted by The Independent, with over 17,000 readers taking part. The survey was part of the The Independent Travel Awards, held on 9 September, which honored various travel-related categories. Cornwall’s popularity stems from its mix of family-friendly seaside resorts, surf-friendly beaches, dog-friendly stretches of sand, upscale hotels, and traditional country pubs. The county’s appeal was highlighted by Assistant Travel Editor Emilee Tombs, who has visited Cornwall since childhood. She describes the area as equally enchanting in the winter, noting a personal experience in St Ives where a rainbow appeared after a rainy morning spent playing the card game Uno by the fire. Cornwall is also known for its artisan shops, cream teas, pasties (a traditional savory pastry), and fresh seafood. The region offers a range of walking and cycling trails, including the Lizard Coastal Walk and the Land’s End Circuit, which provide scenic views and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Prestigious seaside hotels such as The Scarlet, The Pig at Harlyn Bay, and Carbis Bay are ranked among the best places to stay in Britain, offering luxury and comfort. Northumberland came in second in the survey, praised for similar attractions, including its scenic landscapes and historic sites. One of its highlights is walking beneath Bamburgh Castle, a striking medieval fortress overlooking the North Sea. The Northumberland Coast Path, a 65-mile trail stretching from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed, was chosen by Commercial Editor Helen Wilson-Beevers for a Mother’s Day staycation. She particularly enjoys the section between Sugar Sands beach and the fishing village of Craster, which offers a peaceful and picturesque setting. The survey underscores the growing appeal of UK destinations that offer both natural beauty and cultural experiences. Whether it’s the rugged coastline of Cornwall or the historic charm of Northumberland, these regions continue to attract travelers seeking memorable and varied experiences.
