The Independent Travel Awards 2026 took place on 8 September at the Kimpton Fitzroy London and was sponsored by Loveholidays. These awards honored top travel destinations and service providers, based on the preferences of 17,000 participants. This was the first time The Independent, a well-known British newspaper, organized such an event to celebrate excellence in the travel industry. The awards aimed to reflect current traveler trends and highlight companies and locations that offer exceptional experiences. Spain was named the best destination in Europe, a region known for its rich culture, historic cities, and beautiful landscapes. Dublin, the capital of Ireland, was recognized as the best European city, praised for its vibrant atmosphere, historic landmarks, and welcoming environment. Meanwhile, the USA was awarded the best destination outside of Europe, highlighting its diverse attractions, from natural wonders to major urban centers. Within the UK, Cornwall was named the best place to visit, celebrated for its scenic coastline and rural charm. Hotel Cafe Royal in London was honored as the best hotel in the UK, known for its elegant design and historic significance. Edinburgh Castle, a prominent landmark in Scotland, was named the best UK attraction, drawing visitors with its historical significance and stunning views. Center Parcs, a chain of holiday parks offering a mix of outdoor activities and family-friendly accommodations, was named the best holiday park. Great Rail Journeys, a company specializing in scenic train tours across Europe, was recognized as the best rail tour provider. P&O Ferries, a major ferry service operating across the English Channel and the Mediterranean, was named the best ferry line. Viking, known for its river cruises along Europe's major waterways, was awarded best river cruise line. Hurtigruten, a Norwegian company offering small ship cruises along the coast of Norway and the Arctic, was named best small ship cruise line. Princess Cruises, a large operator of ocean cruises around the world, received the best ocean cruise line award. Jet2 and easyJet, two major budget airlines, were named best short-haul airlines, while Emirates, a leading long-haul carrier, was honored as best long-haul airline. Tui was recognized as best tour operator and best all-inclusive resort brand, offering a wide range of travel packages. Trailfinders was named best escorted/guided tour operator, Intrepid Travel was named best solo holiday provider and best in sustainable and ethical travel practices, and Crystal Ski was awarded best ski holiday operator. Hilton was named best worldwide hotel brand, and Villa Plus was named best villa operator, offering private rental accommodations for travelers seeking unique stays.
