Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final installment in Square Enix's reimagining of the iconic 1997 role-playing game, is set to release on April 8, 2027. This game will be available on major platforms, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and X, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game introduces full open-world exploration, a significant shift from the more linear structure of previous entries in the trilogy. At Gamescom 2026, players were given a chance to experience a demo of Revelation, allowing them to explore the Highwind airship and control beloved characters like Cid and Vincent Valentine. The game’s interface lets players choose which character to control at any time, and they can explore various regions, such as Wutai, Mideel, Junon, Corel, and Gongaga. The transition from the Highwind airship to the ground was described as seamless, with players able to travel on foot or ride a Chocobo, a friendly, bird-like creature from the Final Fantasy universe. A major new feature in Revelation is the FITS (Final Fantasy Interactive Tactical System) class system, which lets players customize their characters' abilities based on the outfits they wear. Each outfit offers different combat advantages: Warrior focuses on the Override status effect, Knight emphasizes defense, Invoker allows for combo-based attacks, and Black Mage specializes in elemental spells. This system aims to provide greater flexibility and deeper strategic options in battle. The Highwind airship serves as a central hub for exploration, allowing players to travel freely across the open world and parachute down at any location. Cid, the airship’s captain, and Vincent Valentine join the party, offering unique abilities and story contributions. During the demo, players could explore areas like the Grasslands and Wutai, where they encountered new quests, Moogle shacks (small, friendly creatures that assist players), and locations linked to the Queen’s Blood game, a spin-off in the Final Fantasy VII universe. Revelation also introduces a grappling hook as a new gadget, improving mobility, and enhances the Chocobo's abilities, allowing them to jump higher and hover. Players can quickly return to the Highwind with a single button press and use fast travel to move across the map. With its open-world design, the game is expected to have a longer playtime than the previous two entries in the trilogy. As the final installment, Revelation is seen as the culmination of Square Enix's ambitious remake project, offering what is anticipated to be the most complete and immersive version of the Final Fantasy VII story yet.
