Square Enix has officially announced that the third and final part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, titled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, will launch on April 8, 2027. The game will be available on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and X, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. This follows the release of the first two installments: Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024). The trilogy was initiated in the 2010s with the goal of updating the original Final Fantasy VII game, which first released in 1997, with modern graphics and storytelling techniques. According to director Naoki Hamaguchi, the developers looked to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, an animated film released in 2005, as a key source of visual inspiration for the remake series. Advent Children is set two years after the original game and is known for its detailed character designs and expressive animation, particularly of characters like Tifa, Cloud, and Sephiroth. Hamaguchi explained that the team aimed to bring the visual style and artistic flair of the film into a playable format, capturing its emotional and aesthetic impact. Despite the influence of Advent Children, the developers acknowledge that video game graphics have advanced significantly since 2005. As a result, the quality of the remakes surpasses that of the animated film. The trilogy has been developed using the Unreal Engine 4, a widely used game development tool. While Unreal Engine 5 is available and offers more advanced features, the developers chose Unreal Engine 4 for its familiarity and reliability, ensuring they could fully leverage its capabilities to achieve their creative vision. The Final Fantasy VII series, which first gained popularity in the 1990s, has remained a cornerstone of the role-playing game genre. With Revelation now confirmed for 2027, fans of the franchise can look forward to the culmination of this ambitious remake project, which aims to honor the original while embracing modern gaming technology.
