GOG, a digital PC gaming platform, is bringing back a piece of retro gaming nostalgia by offering downloadable 3D models and printable packaging scans for a select group of classic PC games. This initiative, dubbed the "Printable Big Box" collection, aims to recreate the experience of owning physical game boxes, which were once a staple of PC gaming before the rise of digital distribution platforms like Steam. Currently, the collection includes five games: Armikrog, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, Myst, and Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. For each of these titles, GOG has created a 3D model of the original box art, which users can download and view on their computers. Additionally, they can print a high-resolution, foldable version of the box design. These printable templates are available in multiple formats, including PDF, SVG, and Adobe Illustrator, allowing users to choose the one that best suits their needs. The 3D models are designed to animate, showing the front flap of the box opening. This feature adds a dynamic element to what was once a static piece of collectible media. GOG explains that the initiative is part of a broader mission to preserve not just the games themselves, but also the physical artifacts that once accompanied them. GOG acknowledges that physical media often doesn't last as long as digital software. Game boxes can be lost, damaged, or discarded over time. By scanning and allowing users to print their own versions, GOG is taking a unique approach to preservation. This effort mirrors the company's commitment to ensuring that classic games remain playable on modern systems, now extended to the physical packaging that once made these games so memorable.
