Philippe Bascaules, who has dedicated thirty years to Château Margaux, one of France's most prestigious wine estates, will retire at the end of this year. He will be succeeded by Aurélien Valance, the current deputy general director, who will take over as head of the first grand cru classé on December 1, 2026. The transition will be internal, with no external candidates considered to replace Bascaules. The decision was announced on October 1, emphasizing the continuity of leadership within the estate. Bascaules joined Château Margaux in 1990 as operations director, a role he held until 2011. He later spent five years managing a vineyard in the Napa Valley in California before returning to Château Margaux in March 2017 as general director. Alexis Leven-Mentzelopoulos, one of the château's co-owners, praised Bascaules for his "commitment, availability, and high standards." Although he will retire from his official role, Bascaules will remain a consultant, assisting during crucial times such as harvests, wine-making, and blending, alongside Éric Boissenot, the château's consulting oenologist for 35 years. Aurélien Valance first visited Château Margaux in 2001 as an intern. After graduating from HEC, a top French business school, and working in New York, he returned to the estate in January 2006 as commercial director. He was promoted to deputy general director in 2016, overseeing commercial and operational matters. According to Leven-Mentzelopoulos, his appointment represents a natural continuation of the château's long-standing traditions and history. Aurélien Valance will be supported by Benjamin Vimal, who joined the estate on May 6 as technical and operational director, overseeing all processes from vine cultivation to bottling. Blandine de Rouffignac, who has been with the estate since 2018, now leads research and development and manages the domain's experimentation programs. Valance has expressed confidence in the team's capabilities, stating in a statement that he approaches his new role with "much humility, but also with the strength of an experienced and committed team." He aims to continue the work started by Bascaules and the entire team that sustains the estate daily.
