Alaska Airlines plans new Anchorage-Tokyo route

Alaska Airlines has announced plans to launch a non-stop flight between Anchorage, Alaska, and Tokyo-Narita, Japan, once government approvals are secured. The service is set to begin on May 13, 2027, with daily flights from Anchorage to Tokyo-Narita running through September 7, followed by return flights from Tokyo-Narita to Anchorage through September 8.

Flight schedule crosses international date line

Flights departing Anchorage at 2:10 p.m. will arrive in Tokyo-Narita at 3:25 p.m. the following day, crossing the international date line. Return flights will leave Tokyo-Narita at 9:45 p.m. and arrive in Anchorage at noon the same day, with travel times of approximately eight hours and fifteen minutes to Japan and seven hours and fifteen minutes on the return trip.

Route will be seasonal with winter resumption

The route will operate seasonally, with flights resuming in January 2028 after an autumn break. No flights are scheduled between the end of the September program and the winter resumption, indicating a focus on specific travel seasons.

Service includes premium amenities

The service will be adapted to the trip duration, with First Class offering reclining seats, multi-course meals, light bedding, and a travel kit, along with access to the Alaska Lounge in Anchorage. Main Cabin and Premium Class will include meals with vegetarian options, increased legroom, and additional services, though Premium Class will not be a full long-haul premium economy cabin. Free Wi-Fi for Atmos Rewards members is planned on some flights, depending on Starlink deployment on the MAX 8 fleet.

Route aims to boost tourism and trade

Alaska Airlines describes the route as a response to long-standing demand for travel and economic exchange between Alaska and Japan. The company hopes to provide Alaskans with direct access to Japan and attract more Japanese visitors. Governor Mike Dunleavy highlights attractions like the aurora borealis and Denali National Park, as well as the potential for stronger business ties with Japan.

New domestic routes from Anchorage

The new Tokyo route will be accompanied by three new domestic routes from Anchorage: Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Nashville. Each will operate once a week on Saturdays from June 12 to August 7, 2027. These additions will create the largest non-stop flight program from the state in its history, coinciding with the airline’s 95th anniversary.

Anchorage reclaims its international role

Anchorage, once a key stop for flights between Europe and Asia, will now directly connect to Japan. The route recalls Anchorage’s historical role in international air transport during the Cold War, when flying over the Soviet Union was restricted, making Alaska a preferred stop for transcontinental routes.

Seattle’s existing Japanese route complements Anchorage

The Anchorage–Tokyo route complements an existing Japanese presence from Seattle, where the Seattle–Tokyo-Narita route was launched on May 12, 2025. This was the first step in building a long-haul network from Seattle, made possible by the merger with Hawaiian Airlines and access to wide-body aircraft.

New Seattle–Osaka route expected soon

Another new route is expected to open on May 14, 2027: Seattle–Osaka-Kansai, operated by Hawaiian Airlines using Airbus A330-200 aircraft. This route will be year-round, with four weekly flights, and will offer business class seats that can be converted into beds.

Part of Alaska’s international expansion plan

These developments are part of Alaska Airlines’ "Alaska Accelerate" plan, which aims to make Seattle an international gateway serving at least fifteen long-haul intercontinental destinations by 2030. The Anchorage–Tokyo route adds a direct link from Alaska using a smaller aircraft compared to the wide-body planes used from Seattle.
