New routes to Salalah, Oman

Air Astana is adding two new international routes to Salalah, Oman, starting on October 23 and 24, 2026. Flights will depart from Almaty and Astana, with one weekly flight from each city on Fridays and Saturdays, respectively.

Details of the Salalah flights

The flights to Salalah will be operated using Airbus A320 aircraft. The Civil Aviation Committee of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport confirmed the use of this aircraft type for the route. Salalah is Air Astana’s first destination in Oman.

Salalah as a unique tourist destination

Salalah, located in southern Oman, is known for its unique natural attractions. The area is part of the Dhofar mountains, which become lush and green during the summer monsoon season. This makes it a distinct leisure destination compared to the major cities of the Gulf.

Planned route to Tokyo-Narita

Air Astana plans to launch a new route connecting Almaty to Tokyo-Narita starting on November 30, 2026. This route is subject to government approval and will operate with two weekly flights using Airbus A321LR aircraft.

Aircraft details and passenger services

The Airbus A321LR will be configured with 166 seats: 16 in business class and 150 in economy. The business class seats can be converted into fully flat beds, and 18 economy seats will have extra space under the name "MySeat."

Code-sharing agreement with Japan Airlines

The Almaty–Tokyo-Narita route will be operated by Air Astana but will be code-shared with Japan Airlines. This partnership allows Japan Airlines to promote the route without taking operational control of the flights. Tokyo will be Air Astana’s 22nd new route in 2026.

Statement from Air Astana’s director

Ibrahim Canliel, general director of Air Astana, emphasized the importance of the Tokyo route. He noted that Tokyo is a major center for business and tourism and that the new route will enhance exchanges between Kazakhstan and Japan.

Resumption of Dubai flights

Air Astana is also working to resume its Dubai service, which was previously suspended due to regional tensions and airspace restrictions. The airline plans to restart flights from October 1, 2026, with a gradual increase in frequency depending on the evolving situation in the Middle East.

Strategic expansion under new leadership

The new routes to Salalah and Tokyo are part of Air Astana’s broader strategy under Ibrahim Canliel’s leadership. Canliel took over as general director in April 2026, following the departure of Peter Foster. The airline is focusing on both leisure tourism and economic and cultural exchanges through these new connections.
