Bautista gains muscle for Kratos role

Actor Dave Bautista added 9 kilograms of muscle to prepare for his role as Kratos in the Prime Video series God of War. The role requires a physically imposing presence, and Bautista has been training intensively to meet the demands of the character.

Replacement for Kratos role

Bautista officially took over the role of Kratos from Ryan Hurst in August after Hurst suffered a biceps injury during filming and had to step down due to his recovery time. Hurst had previously portrayed the character in the God of War video game franchise.

Bautista shares fitness progress

In early September, Bautista posted an Instagram video showing his improved physique, revealing he had been training with weights for three weeks and had two months to reach his goal. He later shared another post stating he had gained 20 pounds (about 9 kilograms) for the role, bringing his weight to 250 pounds (about 113 kilograms).

Weight loss and fitness concerns

Bautista, who previously weighed around 290 pounds (about 131 kilograms) during his WWE career, had lost significant muscle mass in recent years while pursuing more diverse acting roles. This led to some fan concerns about his ability to portray the muscular Spartan Kratos.

Series based on Norse mythology

The God of War series will be based on the Norse mythology universe of the PlayStation video game franchise. It will follow Kratos and Atreus as they travel to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, at the highest peak of the nine realms.

Two seasons ordered for series

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the God of War series, indicating a commitment to the show and its adaptation of the popular video game franchise.
