New God of War Spin-Off Announced

The God of War franchise has announced a new spin-off titled God of War: Laufey, set for release on February 16, 2027, for the PS5 platform. The project is a separate adaptation from the Prime Video series, which is still in development.

Prime Video Adaptation in Development

In 2022, Deadline reported on the ambitious and risky project of adapting the God of War series for television. The game God of War, the eighth in the series, has sold 23 million copies since 2018, while God of War: Ragnarok has attracted 20 million players.

First Look at the Adaptation

In February 2026, Prime Video shared the first image of the adaptation, showing actor Ryan Hurst, bald with war paint on his body and face, alongside young Callum Vinson, who plays his son Atreus. The child, also appearing in the slasher Crystal Lake on Amazon Prime in the role of Jason Voorhees, was shown focused on his bow, under the gaze of his father, in the woods.

Behind the Scenes of the Adaptation

"Father and Son. Discover the first look at Kratos and Atreus in the God of War series, now in production. Their journey to the highest peak of all realms begins," the platform posted on social media, referencing the quest of this duo who wish to scatter the ashes of Laufey, wife and mother. Dave Bautista will finally be Kratos.

Cast and Crew of the Adaptation

Following a serious injury, Dave Bautista ultimately inherited the role of Kratos instead of Ryan Hurst. He will be accompanied in the series, under the direction of Ronald D. Moore, a screenwriter known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson in the role of Thor, Mandy Patinkin in the role of Odin, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Teresa Palmer, Max Parker, and Sonya Walger are also part of the cast.

No Broadcast Date Announced

No broadcast date has been announced so far for the Prime Video adaptation, which remains in production without a confirmed release window.
