Canon has introduced a new software called Dual Pixel 3D, which uses data from its Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology to turn regular photos into realistic 3D images. The software will be available as a free download for Windows users starting October 3, and it requires Windows 11 64-bit 24H2 or later. This technology uses a special algorithm to convert single photos into 3D models in formats like OBJ or GLB, or into MP4 videos with detailed textures.
The Dual Pixel 3D feature works with several Canon mirrorless cameras, including the EOS R10 and models up to the EOS R5 series. These cameras use the Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, which was first introduced in the EOS R5 in 2020. The most recent camera to include this sensor is the newly announced EOS R8 Mark II. This sensor captures depth and phase-detection data in a single shot, allowing for 3D imaging without the need for additional equipment.
With Dual Pixel 3D, users can create immersive 3D images and models from a single RAW photo. The technology also works with JPEGs from the new EOS R8 Mark II, which contain depth information from slightly different perspectives captured by each pixel's two photodiodes. This information is then converted into 3D shape data. Users can adjust the depth effect to create either a more pronounced or subtler 3D appearance. Additionally, the depth data makes it easier to remove backgrounds when creating 3D models or stereographic photos.
Canon has provided tips on how to take photos optimized for 3D conversion on its YouTube channel. Photographers working in product and still life photography may find this feature especially useful. The new software will be available for testing on October 3, and Canon will share user experiences with it afterward.
The Dual Pixel 3D software is compatible with several Canon mirrorless cameras, including the EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R5, EOS R6 Mark III, EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R7, EOS R8 Mark II, EOS R8, and EOS R10. Compatible lenses include a range of RF-series lenses such as the RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM, RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM, and others.
