New Fitbit device launched

Google has introduced the Fitbit Edge, a new smart bracelet that sits between its screenless Fitbit Air and the more advanced Pixel Watch series. The Fitbit Edge is designed for everyday use, offering features that balance functionality and practicality.

Design and specifications

The Fitbit Edge features a 1.34-inch AMOLED screen, which is 46% larger than the screen on the Fitbit Charge 6. It has a slim aluminum case measuring 11.5 mm in thickness and weighs 17.7 g without a strap. The device includes a physical side button for navigation and is certified IP68 for dust and water resistance, allowing it to be used in water up to 50 meters deep.

Enhanced health and fitness features

The Fitbit Edge includes an improved GPS chip for more accurate route tracking, as well as sensors for heart rate, SpO2, ECG, skin temperature, altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope, and ambient light. It is also the first Fitbit device with a replaceable battery, making it more repairable and potentially more sustainable.

Battery life and connectivity

The Fitbit Edge offers up to seven days of battery life in eco mode, with a full charge achievable in about 90 minutes. It supports more than 50 sports modes and can automatically detect over 100 activities, including stroller walks. However, it lacks an NFC chip, so it does not support contactless payments or Google Pay.

Health tracking and subscriptions

Health features include ECG for detecting atrial fibrillation, sleep tracking, stress monitoring, and monthly summaries of blood pressure and insulin resistance trends. These features require a Google Health Premium subscription. The device also integrates with the Flo Health app for women's health tracking, including menstrual cycle and fertility data.

AI-driven health advice

The Fitbit Edge includes a Health Guardian function powered by Google's AI, which provides personalized health advice and adjusts training recommendations based on the user's activity and physical condition. This feature aims to enhance the user's overall health and fitness experience.

Availability and pricing

The Fitbit Edge will be available in four colors—volcanic black, mist, olive, and peach pink—with a special edition featuring basketball player Stephen Curry at a higher price. It will be available for pre-order starting October 12, with a release date of October 27. It is priced at 179.99 euros with three months of Google Health Premium subscription included.

Comparison with other Fitbit models

The Fitbit Edge is priced higher than the Fitbit Charge 6, which costs 159.99 euros, but significantly less than the Pixel Watch 5, which is priced at 419 euros. The Fitbit Air, which lacks a screen, remains popular, with over 80% of new Fitbit users choosing it. The Fitbit Edge aims to stand out through comfort, design, and AI-driven health tracking.
