Nissan has unveiled the name of its upcoming city car, which will be called the Pixo. This all-electric model is part of segment A, meaning it's a small, urban vehicle designed for city driving. The Pixo will be assembled in Europe for European markets and will be officially presented on September 23. This marks Nissan's return to the very small car market, a segment it had left more than a decade ago. The name Pixo is not new; Nissan used it between 2009 and 2013 for a small city car based on the Suzuki Alto. This time, however, the Pixo will be built on a different platform, with production moving to France. The Pixo will be closely related to Renault's new electric Twingo, making it the Japanese cousin of the Twingo. This follows the previous collaboration where Nissan's Micra was based on Renault's R5. This will be the third time Renault has created a model specifically for Nissan, with the second being the second-generation Dacia Spring, unveiled on September 8. The Pixo will use the same 82 horsepower motor and 27.5 kWh LFP battery as the Twingo, providing an approximate range of 260 kilometers on a mixed driving cycle. Production will take place at Renault's plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, alongside the Twingo, starting in early 2027. Nissan is aiming for simplicity in its strategy. Although the Renault-Nissan alliance has slowed in recent years, it still allows for the sharing of platforms and technologies. This partnership is crucial for Nissan to quickly fill gaps in its product lineup without the high cost of developing new models from scratch. In the booming electric city car market, Nissan previously had no affordable options. The company is trying to accelerate its efforts, with CEO Ivan Espinosa stating that it is necessary to match the speed of Chinese manufacturers to remain competitive. Using an already developed Twingo aligns with this strategy. The Pixo is expected to have an entry-level price under 20,000 euros and will be eligible for the Coup de Pouce CEE, a European subsidy program for electric vehicles. However, Nissan has not yet revealed the exact price, launch date, or specific selling points of the Pixo compared to its competitors. These details will be announced during the official presentation on September 23.
