Nissan has introduced a new electric city car called the PIXO, completing its lineup of electric vehicles in Europe. This follows the recent relaunch of the Leaf, one of Nissan's most well-known electric models, and the Micra, a compact hatchback. The PIXO is produced at Renault's factory in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, and shares its platform, battery, and motor with the Renault Twingo E-Tech and the new Dacia Spring. While the name PIXO is not new—Nissan previously sold a city car with the same name between 2009 and 2013, which was essentially a rebadged Suzuki Alto—the new model shares little else with its predecessor.
The PIXO is equipped with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, which holds 27.5 kWh of energy and provides a certified range of 259 kilometers under the World Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) cycle. This battery type is less energy-dense than the commonly used nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry but offers better longevity and can withstand repeated full charges without significant degradation. The car features a 50 kW direct current (DC) fast-charging system, which can charge the battery from 15% to 80% in just 28 minutes. It also includes an 11 kW alternating current (AC) charger that supports bidirectional charging, useful for home energy systems. The motor delivers 60 kW (approximately 82 horsepower), and the car offers 356 liters of trunk space, including 50 liters of underfloor storage. It measures 3.80 meters in length and 1.79 meters in width, with a turning diameter of 9.9 meters, making it maneuverable in tight urban spaces.
Nissan plans to position the PIXO as a distinct option in the market alongside the Renault Twingo E-Tech, despite both vehicles being built on the same platform. The PIXO aims to stand out with advanced features such as native integration with Google, the AI assistant Gemini (available in 16 languages), facial recognition technology that automatically adjusts the car's settings to the driver, and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 7-inch digital dashboard. These features are typically found in more expensive vehicles, making the PIXO a notable contender in its class. While the exact price has not been announced, it is expected to be around 20,000 euros.
The PIXO is produced in the European Union, which could make it eligible for the French ecological bonus, a government incentive for purchasing eco-friendly vehicles. However, Nissan has not officially confirmed this. The car is technically identical to the Twingo E-Tech, with the same LFP battery, motor power, and fast-charging capabilities. However, the PIXO has a slightly lower range of 259 km under the WLTP cycle compared to the Twingo. It also offers fast charging as standard, while it is an optional feature on the Twingo. Additionally, the PIXO inherits the Twingo's modular design, including two sliding rear seats that allow the trunk space to adjust between 260 and 356 liters. Prices and pre-orders are expected to be announced in December.
