The French National Publishers' Syndicate (SNE) has launched a new tool called Livrempreinte, designed to help publishers calculate the carbon footprint of producing books. This platform allows publishers to measure the greenhouse gas emissions associated with printing books, offering data on a per-copy basis and enabling comparisons between different production options. The tool takes into account various factors such as the type of paper used, the weight of the paper, the manufacturing plant, the consumption of raw materials, printing and binding processes, the inks and glues used, any special finishes, and the transportation methods. The results are presented both for the entire print run and for each individual copy, with a detailed breakdown of the main sources of emissions. Livrempreinte was created in partnership with Écograf, a consulting firm that specializes in environmental issues related to the printing industry, and AKKI. The tool uses a shared database that collects data from papermakers and printers to ensure that calculations are consistent and reliable. It also considers the geographical location of production sites and the types of transport used. The accuracy of the results depends on the quality of the data provided, with average values used when specific information is not available. Publishers can use the tool to run simulations and explore the environmental impact of different choices, such as switching paper types, formats, printers, or production processes. The SNE emphasizes that the tool is not meant to impose strict carbon-related standards on book production but rather to provide publishers with information to make informed decisions while maintaining the quality and appeal of their products. It is important to note that the calculator does not account for the full environmental impact of a book over its entire lifecycle, including distribution, usage, and disposal. Livrempreinte is available to all French publishers, regardless of whether they are members of the SNE. Pre-registration is currently free and non-binding until November 18, 2026, after which access will be based on an annual subscription, with costs varying depending on the size of the company. Free access is also planned for organizations that produce fewer than ten print runs each year. In the long term, the SNE aims to collect data from suppliers and generate anonymized industry-wide statistics. As part of the broader "Chapitres responsables" program, which includes Livrempreinte, there are also educational modules aimed at raising awareness among employees about environmental issues in the book industry and the impact of decisions at various stages of production. This initiative has received support from the French government through the "Supporting green alternatives 2" program under the France 2030 initiative, managed by the Bank of Territories, as well as from the National Book Center.
