The Médiathèque départementale d'Ille-et-Vilaine, a public library service in France, has introduced a new tool called the **Facilomètre** to assist professionals in selecting books for a "Facile à lire" collection, which is French for "Easy to Read." This collection is designed to provide accessible reading materials, particularly for people with reading difficulties or learning challenges. The **Facilomètre** is an Excel file containing eight tabs, including a user guide and seven different grids tailored to various types of documents such as novels, comics, poetry, and documentaries. Each grid uses specific criteria to evaluate the editorial production and content of the works. For novels, the tool checks for a page count under 200 and a straightforward, linear narrative. For comics, it assesses the clarity of illustrations and the readability of the text and font used. For picture books, it considers whether the combination of text and images can engage adult readers without appearing overly simplistic or childish. Users input responses of "Yes," "No," or "Not applicable" based on these criteria, and the tool automatically determines if a book qualifies as "easy to read." Some criteria are prioritized, and if a book receives too many negative responses, it is excluded from the collection. The project began in early 2025 and aimed to create a standardized selection process, replacing the previous method that relied on the subjective opinions of selection committees. The development of the **Facilomètre** was also influenced by the iRead4Skills European project, which studied how to analyze text complexity and improve reading skills for adults. The tool has been refined through multiple iterations and is now in its thirteenth version. However, the Médiathèque stresses that the **Facilomètre** is meant to support, not replace, the professional judgment of librarians. A webinar to introduce the tool to the public is scheduled for February 9, 2027.
