Samsung updates sleep apnea tracking

Samsung is enhancing the sleep apnea tracking feature on its Galaxy devices, with the update set to launch in November, beginning in South Korea. The new version of the feature uses an improved AI algorithm to provide more detailed sleep reports than previous versions.

New AI provides more details

The updated feature allows users to check information related to their breathing difficulties every hour. Previously, the smartwatch could only detect whether a user had sleep apnea, without giving details about the condition or when it occurred.

Sleep apnea detection works in stages

The Galaxy Watch’s sleep apnea detection feature works by having users wear the device during sleep for several nights. Results are classified into three levels: mild, occasional, and frequent, which helps users manage the condition more effectively.

Widespread feature in health wearables

Many smartwatch and health tracking device manufacturers have included sleep apnea detection in their products. Sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues like hypertension, heart disease, and concentration problems if left untreated, but it can be effectively managed with proper care.

Wearables detect but don’t treat

While wearable devices like the Galaxy Watch can detect sleep apnea, they cannot provide treatment for the condition. The new feature will first be available in South Korea, starting in November, on the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, the Watch 9, and the Ring.

Future updates for more devices

Samsung plans to integrate the advanced sleep apnea detection feature into the Galaxy Watch 7 and 8 through future software updates. To use the feature, users will need to record two nights of sleep over a 10-day period to receive detailed health insights.
