Apple introduced its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, during a product launch event led by new CEO John Ternus. The iPhone Duo has a unique design that folds into a passport-sized device, featuring a 5.4-inch external screen and a 7.6-inch internal screen when unfolded. This makes the display size closer to that of an iPad mini, offering users a larger viewing experience in a compact form. Apple describes it as the thinnest iPhone ever when open, thanks to a magnetic hinge designed to make the fold less visible. The iPhone Duo brings new features to the iPhone lineup, including support for the Apple Pencil—a tool typically used with iPads—and uses a Touch ID fingerprint sensor instead of Face ID. It runs on the A20 Pro chip, the same powerful processor found in the recently released iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. The device also includes the new C2 modem, which enhances connectivity and performance. On the back, it has two 48-megapixel cameras: a wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle lens. However, it does not include a telephoto lens, which is common in higher-end smartphones for zoom capabilities. Battery life is a standout feature of the iPhone Duo, with up to 31 hours of video playback on the internal screen and 44 hours on the external screen. This is due to the device's dual battery system. The iPhone Duo is priced starting at 2,339 euros (approximately $1,999) for the 256 GB model, with higher storage options available up to 3,839 euros for a 2 TB version. Pre-orders will begin on October 16, with the device becoming available on October 23. It is offered in two colors: Stellar white and Night sky. The iPhone Duo is built with a titanium chassis and is IP68 certified, meaning it is resistant to water and dust. However, it only supports eSIM technology, and a physical SIM card will not be available. While foldable smartphones currently represent less than 2% of global smartphone sales, analysts believe Apple's entry into this niche market could lead to significant market capture. The iPhone Duo is expected to appeal to users seeking a blend of portability, performance, and innovative design.
