Apple is reportedly working on a larger, more advanced version of its foldable iPhone, which could include features like an optical zoom camera, Face ID facial recognition, and a significantly larger screen. According to recent reports, this device—possibly named the iPhone Duo Max—could feature an 8-inch display and may be released within the next two years. The goal appears to be competing directly with Samsung's latest foldable models, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and its future successors. The upcoming iPhone model is expected to improve upon the current iPhone Duo line, which currently uses a Touch ID fingerprint sensor for security. The new device may include a more advanced camera sensor with optical zoom, allowing users to magnify distant objects more clearly than standard digital zoom. It could also add a front-facing sensor for Face ID, a feature that has not yet been included in the 2026 iPhone Duo. These upgrades are anticipated to roll out over the next two generations of the iPhone Duo, potentially resulting in two distinct models by 2028 that directly rival Samsung’s foldable lineup. The current iPhone Duo already has a 5,400 mAh battery, which is larger than the 5,000 mAh battery in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. It also features a faster processor, which may give Apple an edge in performance. Some reports suggest that Apple’s foldable iPhone already outperforms Samsung’s in terms of battery life and processing power, putting pressure on Samsung to respond with its own improvements. To stay competitive, future Galaxy Z Fold models may focus on enhancing camera quality, improving cooling systems for better performance, and potentially adding features like IP68 water and dust resistance, as well as support for the S Pen stylus. These features are already available on the iPhone Duo, giving Apple an advantage in the foldable smartphone market. If Apple's plans are confirmed, it could signal a new phase in the race for innovation between the two tech giants.
