Google is rolling out a new security feature designed to help users protect their YouTube accounts on smart TVs. The feature, announced by YouTube's head, Neal Mohan, on September 10, allows users to set up a four-digit code that locks their account on television devices. This means that if someone else tries to access their YouTube profile on a smart TV, they would need the code to unlock it. The feature is being made available globally on most smart TVs, streaming devices, and gaming consoles. To enable the "Account Lock" feature, users need to open the YouTube app on their TV, navigate to the account settings, and select the "Account Lock" option to set up the code. Once activated, the account can be unlocked either from the TV itself or through a connected smartphone. This provides an extra layer of security for users who might be concerned about unauthorized access on shared devices. It’s important to note that this feature is specific to YouTube and does not replace the need for a Google account password. It also does not apply to other Google services like Gmail or Google Drive. If a user forgets their four-digit code, they can disable the feature by re-authenticating with their Google account credentials. This ensures that users can still regain access to their account without being locked out permanently. The "Watch as Guest" option remains available on all devices, allowing users to view content without signing in. This new security feature aims to make YouTube more secure on larger screens while maintaining the convenience of guest viewing for those who prefer not to log in.
