Jailbreaking PS5 becomes easier

Since the end of September, jailbreaking the PS5 has become significantly easier with the release of Relapse, a chain of exploits shared on GitHub. This tool allows almost all PS5 consoles running system software versions 7.00 to 13.60 to bypass security protections and run unauthorized programs.

Emulator enables PS3 games on modified consoles

On October 9, the developer kamb205 released KB-RPCS3, an emulator that allows PS3 games to be played on jailbroken PS5 consoles. This development highlights the growing capabilities of modified systems but also raises concerns about the potential for misuse.

Jailbreaking linked to piracy and enforcement

The jailbreak has also been used for piracy, as seen with the closure of Overdrive, a pirated store offering over 1,600 free PS4 and PS5 games. Sony may have been behind the shutdown, and copies of the games reappeared on GitHub shortly after. This has prompted Sony to increase its efforts to secure its network.

PSN requires updated system software

According to a report by Notebookcheck on October 15, PS5 consoles must now run system software version 14.10 to connect to the PlayStation Network (PSN), Sony's online service. Users who remain on version 14.00 are restricted to offline mode, limiting their access to online features.

Updates block jailbreaking tools

The 14.00 update, released on September 16, already blocked Relapse and Byepervisor Reborn, a tool that bypasses the hypervisor, a critical security layer in the console. The 14.10 update, released on October 1, includes additional security patches, further complicating the use of jailbreaking tools.

Jailbreaking conflicts with new game requirements

The latest update also means that users who wish to play GTA 6 must update their consoles to version 14.10, as the game requires this version. This forces users to choose between maintaining their jailbreak or accessing the latest games and online features on the PlayStation Network.
