New firmware update for PS5 released

Sony has released a new firmware update for the PlayStation 5, version 26.07-14.20.00, which is now available for download on all PS5 consoles. The update focuses on improving messages and usability on certain screens, according to Sony's official notes.

Update size and installation options

The firmware update weighs 1.2 GB and does not include any new features or major changes beyond the usability improvements. Users can install the update automatically when the console is turned on or manually through the "Settings" menu under "System Software" and "System Settings and Software Updates."

Homebrew community's response

The update comes as the homebrew community intensifies efforts to jailbreak the PS5 ahead of the release of GTA 6, scheduled for less than a month from now. Recent jailbreaks have been published for previous firmware versions, including one supporting all PS5 consoles running firmware 7.00-13.60.

Firmware updates and jailbreak compatibility

Some PS5 games required the latest firmware 14.00 to download updates, prompting renewed efforts to develop jailbreaks compatible with updated system software. A prominent member of the PlayStation homebrew community recently presented evidence of a jailbreak for firmware 14.10, though extracting game executables may not be possible.

Sony's possible response

Some speculate that the new firmware update may be part of Sony's strategy to counter these efforts, though the official notes do not mention security improvements. It remains unclear whether today's update 14.20 is a direct response to the jailbreak development. Some believe GTA 6 may require at least version 14.20 to function, now that it is available.

New content and updates for PS5

Despite the security concerns, the PS5 continues to see new content and updates. The PS5 Pro has received improvements to the PSSR, while the standard PS5 has launched the QSSR. Several new games and updates are available, including the free update of SAROS, the upcoming release of Final Fantasy Resonance, and the recent release of CONTROL Resonant, Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, and the DLC of Ghost of Yotei. The PS Plus service also continues to offer new content.
