Since 2022, armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda, specifically the Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), have increased their presence and carried out several attacks in northern Benin. JNIM, which operates primarily in neighboring countries like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, has been using Benin as a corridor to move between its areas of operation. This region, historically less affected by such violence, has now become a new front in the broader Sahel conflict, where militants have been expanding their reach across the region. JNIM is known for carrying out attacks in the Sahel, often targeting security forces, civilians, and infrastructure. The group has been active in Mali for years and has recently intensified its operations in neighboring states. In northern Benin, two large national parks have reportedly been used as logistical bases by the jihadists. These areas, which are usually remote and sparsely populated, provide cover and resources for the group’s movements and operations. The Beninese military has been working to contain the threat, but it faces significant challenges. The region is vast, and resources are limited, making it difficult to monitor and respond to all threats effectively. Additionally, the porous borders between Benin and its neighbors complicate efforts to prevent the movement of armed groups and their supplies. Despite these difficulties, the military continues to carry out operations aimed at disrupting JNIM’s activities and protecting local communities. The situation in northern Benin highlights the growing instability in the Sahel region, where multiple groups, including those affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, have been expanding their influence. This has raised concerns among regional leaders and international partners, who are working to strengthen security cooperation and support local forces in the fight against terrorism. The long-term success of these efforts will depend on sustained collaboration and addressing the underlying factors that contribute to the spread of extremism in the area.
